July 15 marked the 9th annual Tokyo in Tulsa, one of the fastest growing conventions in the Southwest. Held in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Cox Business Center, TnT features all the typical convention fair, bringing top names in art, voice acting, cosplay and, of course, music. This year, they boasted the first American performances for not one, but two popular Visual Kei bands, and I was lucky enough to chat with my favorite of the two, hard rock beauties MeteoroiD. We had lots of laughs while dishing on cultural differences, their recent releases, and meat ^^. Check it out after the break.
It’s that time of year again when Van’s Warped Tour cuts a path through the country bringing with it some of the hottest bands out there. Forty two dates, seven stages and more bands than I can even count bring a mix of punk, rock and just plain fun to a sweltering summer day. This year’s lineup included Nagoya’s hard-rock heroes, coldrain. I had a chance to chat about fans, culture and, of course, music with their front-man and total charmer, Masato, before their show in San Antonio. Read more below the cut.
It was an honor to have the chance to sit down and talk with Matenrou Opera at this years Anime North. For those who have attended, you know how crazy the bands’ schedules get. And with Matenrou’s dedication to performance, that meant practice, practice, practice, with a little sight-seeing thrown in for good measure. Check out our video interview, where we talk about the band, their music and what’s in store for Matenrou Opera moving forward!
Special Thanks to:

Young and talented guitarist Rei started playing classical acoustic guitar at just four years old. Her first mini-album BLU released just a year ago and, with a touch of blues and impressively bilingual lyrics, she’s gained great praise throughout Japan, performing at major events such as Fuji Rock. Her latest mini-album released November 4. Find out more about this up and coming artist after the break.
Japanese Art Rock band, KAO=S, founded in April 2011, blends hypnotic vocals with acoustic guitar and Japanese traditional instruments to create a world all its own. Combined with Kaori’s mesmerizing sword dance, their performance will make you feel transported to somewhere mystical. This will be their third SXSW appearance, the first being in 2012. I personally attended their 2013 performance and it was breathtaking. Find out more about this unique band after the break.
